Problem statement: Existence of people engaging in a variety of sustained and social activities can makes a street lively. Approach: As liveliness involves levels of activities, uses, interactions and their representation, current research appraises street liveliness through behavioral observation of sustained pedestrians’ activities in Meldrum Walk. The objective of this study is to present a simple and low cost method of determining the flue gases oxygen concentration. The method makes use of the Lambda sensor, a part of the fuel injection system of the modern automobile’s engine. A combustion chamber was mounted with a heated Lambda sensor installed in its chimney. Residual oxygen concentrations in the flue gases were estimated by the use of the Nernst equation and compared to a reference combustion analyser. The observed average deviation in the measurements was of about 5 % which is in the range of interest to the industrial combustion.

Domestic violence can involve men to women, men to children, women to children and sometimes women to men. Domestic violence in Kenya is mostly prevalent in middle-income and lower-income levels of the society. In this paper, a prototype system is implemented to administer and manage a national domestic violence call center. This is a GIS-based call center system supporting distress calls by: (i) automatically identifying callers’ locations, (ii) Quickly assessing accurate spatial information from its database about nearby advocate resources and reporting back to the caller, the identified advocate, and (iii) publishing maps in Keyhole Markup Language for viewing in software supporting open standards such as Google Earth. The system was validated using sample data collected from Juja location. This prototype shows promise of being able to offer rapid and timely responses to domestic violence (and other) distress requests utilizing geospatially enabled technologies.

This study presents the effects of countdown signals on the total start-up lost time of automobiles at signalized intersections based on the data collected at intersections in Bangkok, Thailand. This countdown signal is used to warn motorists in queue at the stop line during any red phase on when the green phase will be started. The data indicated that the countdown signals did not have any effects on the saturation headway of automobiles, but on the total start-up lost time. With the use of the countdown signals, the total start-up lost time was decreased from 4.3 seconds to 2.9 seconds, or was reduced by thirty-three percent. Therefore, the countdown signals may be used to increase the capacity of signalized intersections.

Yazd, a desert city located in the center of Iran has very long and fantastic history of coordination with nature to cope with very harsh climate of the region. Two, three or four sided traditional courtyard houses considered as the best prototype of sustainable architecture, which few follow logically. This paper presents traditional concepts using a passive solar house designed and built by present author in 2001. The research evaluated the family reactions, positive and negative aspects and performance features of the house under the concept of "post occupancy evaluation". The results indicated that family likes and dislikes are about the negative feeling of the cool draft in the sitting area, good lighting and views, some acoustical problems and positive feeling of cool air from the cold sunken courtyard. In general, the positive reflections of the family were much more than negative aspects.

Coandã flows have been the study of aircraft designers primarily for the prospect of achieving higher lift coefficient wings. Recently the environmental problem of noise pollution attracted further interest on the matter. The approach used is numerical; the computations were made using a large eddy simulation (LES) technique coupled with a Ffowcs-Williams-Hawkings (FWH) acoustic analysis. The spectrum of the flow was measured at three locations in the vicinity of the ramp showing that the low frequency region is dominant. The findings may be used as reference for the development of quiet aircraft that use super-circulation, as it is the case with the Upper Surface Blown (USB) configurations.
