A wireless modem is a device that makes it possible for computers to join a WLAN (wireless
area network).
As the name suggests, this can be done without the use of Ethernet wires or
other physical cabling.
Properties and Function
These modems have different designs.
Some use Wi-Fi protocols, while others rely on cellular
or satellite protocols.
Any of these can be used to hook up to a WLAN.
Once connected, Web
services can be provided.
These modems are different from DSL modems and dial up connections that rely on phone
lines to connect to the Web.
Cable modems on the other hand, use cable television lines.
Internet Hotspots
By using a wireless modem card, a laptop can access the Web via Internet hotspots.
These are
areas with WLAN enabled.
A WLAN enabled area means physical cabling is not required.
Networks rely on different protocols.
