The organic industry is constantly told that there is no evidence to support these claims. This article looks at published information that shows that organic food is substantially healthier than conventional food. Research published in a 2001 study showed that the current fruit and vegetables in the United States have about half the vitamin content of their counterparts in 1963. The study was based on a comparison of published USDA figures. A scientific study published in the Journal of Applied Nutrition in 1993 clearly showed that organic food is more nutritious than conventional food. Organically and conventionally grown apples, potatoes, pears, wheat and sweet corn were purchased over two years in the western suburbs of Chicago, and then analyzed for

` Chautauqua County Gleaning Proejct Extending the season December 28th, 2010 Thanks to Barnes Greenhouse in Dunkirk, we had plenty of greenhouse plastic to cover the three raised beds in CCRM’s backyard garden. We did a fall planting of lettuce, beet greens, radishes, cilantro, tatsoi, spinach, mizuna, etc. These salad veggies made our Thanksgiving meal more colorful, and thrived long enough to add to salads into December. ~ Uneasy holidays December 23rd, 2010 A special thanks goes out to Stuart Ward from South Dayton for his donation of a ton of winter squash, as well as the crew at Post Apple Scientific Farm for there donation of four tons of potatoes and 300 lbs of winter squash. This last month has seen us trucking all over the county, north and south, to distribute all of this produce in time for both the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday.
