The ESA Bulletin is published four times a year to inform the space-interested public of ESA’s activities. In addition to a wide range of articles, every issue provides an overview of the status of ESA's major space projects. In this issue: Antarctica is just one of several 'space analogues', or environments that can be used to mimic elements of spaceflight on Earth. In 'Home Alone', we look at history of these studies and how ESA is using these environments to prepare its astronauts and trainers for the real thing. Celebrating 50 years of bringing space missions to life, 'ESTEC: ESA's Technical Heart' looks at the planning and development of the facility itself, which began in earnest on 1 January 1963. From designs drawn up in a garden house in Delft 50 years ago, ESTEC has become not only ESA's space hub, but also an essential part of the local economy and the Dutch knowledge and innovation infrastructure. We celebrate one of our most successful science missions in 'Int

On the cover of this month's Bulletin is Vega, ESA’s new launch vehicle, ready to operate alongside the Ariane 5 and Soyuz launchers after its first flight from French Guiana on 13 February. And with another launch coming up, that of ESA's third Automated Transfer Vehicle, so European Hat-trick describes the preparations for the flight of ATV Edoardo Amaldi to the International Space Station. Even with the completion of ESA’s second ATV mission still fresh in our minds, the latest in the series of European space freighters is ready to go. Next to Galileo, Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) is one of the two European Union flagship programmes in space, and another example of how space policy can contribute to improving European citizens’ lives. In this article, we look at the GMES Space Component getting ready for operations and how decision-makers need to see the benefits that GMES can create for national and local communities. We follow Paolo Nespoli through some of his training over the last two years, and look at the background of the mission, seeing why each of these flights is a remarkable team achievement involving coordination between ESA’s Directorates of Human Spaceflight, Operations and Infrastructure, ESA’s corporate services and European industry, in cooperation with the ISS international partners. In The Seeds of Disruptive Innovation, we look at the work of the Advanced Concepts Team, which is helping ESA and the European space sector to not only foresee, but also to enable our future in space. Although space will remain essentially the same, the scope, purpose and types of our use of space in the future are likely to be very different. Many of these will be influenced by innovation in sectors and areas that are not necessarily on the ‘radar screens’ today of space agencies and industry. Indeed, many ideas we have seen in popular science fiction might not always be far from possibility.

As part of their training, ESA’s new astronauts experience ’parabolic flight’, creating weightless conditions to simulate working in space, featured on the cover and inside the ESA Bulletin. In this issue of ESA’s flagship magazine, we also mark ten years of operations of the International Charter ’Space and Major Disasters’, demonstrating the importance of space in helping to deal with natural and technological hazards around the world. Initiated by ESA and the French space agency CNES in 1999, the Charter officially came into operation on 20 October 2000. Since then, the Charter has grown, with more space agencies joining and many more relief organisations able to access its systems. Next, two articles on different but timely aspects of the International Space Station: highlighting the challenges of changing from essentially a construction project to a permanently manned operational outpost, and, with the ISS partners now deciding on extending the life of the ISS, a look at ways t

A stunning image from the Hubble Space Telescope is on the cover of this issue of the Bulletin, as this famous observatory celebrates 20 years in space. Hubble’s discoveries have revolutionised nearly all areas of astronomy, from planetary science to cosmology. And its pictures are unmistakably out of this world. Next in this issue of ESA’s flagship magazine, we look at Alphabus, the coordinated European response to an increased market demand for larger telecommunication payloads, carrying new broadband, broadcasting and mobile communications services. Also in this issue, we look at the Space Component of GMES, the European Earth observation programme led by the European Commission, which will provide data useful in a range of issues including climate change and security. The success of GMES will be achieved through a well-engineered ’space component’, gathering the Earth observation data to turn into services for monitoring the environment and supporting civil security exercises.

On the cover this month, CryoSat-2 is shown here complete, and now on schedule for launch later in February. Read the Bulletin and other publications online, with our visualiser tool. CryoSat-2 carries sophisticated technologies to measure changes in the vast ice sheets that cover Greenland and Antarctica, and sea ice floating in the polar oceans. By accurately measuring thickness change in both types of ice, CryoSat-2 will help us to understand better the role that ice plays in the Earth system. Also in this issue of ESA’s flagship magazine, we look at the European-built Node-3, the last of the three International Space Station Nodes, launched into space this week on the US Space Shuttle. This story features a timeline of events for the Node-3 installation mission.

The cover shows a later version of Ariane, Ariane 5’s first commercial launch on 10 December 1999 carrying ESA’s XMM-Newton observatory - another anniversary! Also in this issue of ESA’s flagship magazine, we focus on another area of ESA, Telecommunications and Integrated Applications. It seems strange to think that when the Telecommunications Programme was created in the new European Space Agency of 1975, European industry had virtually no commercial satellite capability, but now most of us use satellite telecommunications every day, often without realising it.

Also in the spotlight, the Scientific Ground Segments of ESA’s Herschel infrared space telescope and the Planck cosmic background mapper, launched in May to unveil the secrets of the darkest, coldest and oldest parts of the Universe. Completing this issue, we look at how a study of impact craters on Earth and Mars is helping us to understand the evolution of our Solar System, and finally, a look at some small cameras with a big job: the Visual Monitoring Cameras carried on ESA spacecraft. One of these cameras is giving the world a view of Mars every week and encouraging the public to get involved with Europe’s exploration of the Red Planet.

Also in this issue of ESA’s flagship magazine, we look at the Product Assurance and Safety (PA&S) department at ESTEC, Noordwijk. This is the ‘powerhouse’ for quality in ESA, with the responsibility to identify and mitigate all aspects of space projects that could have adverse effects on mission success. Together with the project review cycle, this department provides ESA’s essential backbone for transparency and independent reporting to top-level corporate management.
