On Malaysian streets nowadays, main priority is given to vehicular elements, which seems to comprise the functional qualities of urban public space for human interaction. To perk up such streets, “pedestrianisation” results in making a city centre pedestrian- friendly, and expedites the preservation of historical districts. Problem statement: Existence of people engaging in a variety of sustained and social activities can makes a street lively. Approach: As liveliness involves levels of activities, uses, interactions and their representation, current research appraises street liveliness through behavioral observation of sustained pedestrians’ activities in Meldrum Walk. Result: The data on traffic modes, walking and sustained pedestrians of diverse age groups and genders, different types of activities, postures, over different times of day and night analyzed. Conclusion: Proposing a wider range of attractions and opportunities for activities besides walking, working and shopping for us

The objective of this study is to present a simple and low cost method of determining the flue gases oxygen concentration. The method makes use of the Lambda sensor, a part of the fuel injection system of the modern automobile’s engine. A combustion chamber was mounted with a heated Lambda sensor installed in its chimney. Residual oxygen concentrations in the flue gases were estimated by the use of the Nernst equation and compared to a reference combustion analyser. The observed average deviation in the measurements was of about 5 % which is in the range of interest to the industrial combustion.

Domestic violence can involve men to women, men to children, women to children and sometimes women to men. Domestic violence in Kenya is mostly prevalent in middle-income and lower-income levels of the society. In this paper, a prototype system is implemented to administer and manage a national domestic violence call center. This is a GIS-based call center system supporting distress calls by: (i) automatically identifying callers’ locations, (ii) Quickly assessing accurate spatial information from its database about nearby advocate resources and reporting back to the caller, the identified advocate, and (iii) publishing maps in Keyhole Markup Language for viewing in software supporting open standards such as Google Earth. The system was validated using sample data collected from Juja location. This prototype shows promise of being able to offer rapid and timely responses to domestic violence (and other) distress requests utilizing geospatially enabled technologies.

This study presents the effects of countdown signals on the total start-up lost time of automobiles at signalized intersections based on the data collected at intersections in Bangkok, Thailand. This countdown signal is used to warn motorists in queue at the stop line during any red phase on when the green phase will be started. The data indicated that the countdown signals did not have any effects on the saturation headway of automobiles, but on the total start-up lost time. With the use of the countdown signals, the total start-up lost time was decreased from 4.3 seconds to 2.9 seconds, or was reduced by thirty-three percent. Therefore, the countdown signals may be used to increase the capacity of signalized intersections.

Existence of Cities always depends on the region for the resources-land, food, water, energy or maybe cheap labor. The resource base is vital for the survival of the cities. With increasing urban sprawl there is a great impact on the future of cities and their sustenance. The primary intent of the study is to demonstrate an Urban Design approach towards a sustainable compact urban model in new growth potential areas (case of Cyberabad, Hyderabad, India) as a means to counteract city’s faceless sprawl and environmental degradation by generating compact high density, low energy, mixed-use living and integrating it with the existing city fabric reducing the ecological footprint for future generations. As the selected site offers good natural features, ecologically sensitive areas of the site i.e. Steep slope areas, catchment channels and climatically unsuitable areas from the open space system of the development. The sustainable compact city design approach balances the environmental load

Yazd, a desert city located in the center of Iran has very long and fantastic history of coordination with nature to cope with very harsh climate of the region. Two, three or four sided traditional courtyard houses considered as the best prototype of sustainable architecture, which few follow logically. This paper presents traditional concepts using a passive solar house designed and built by present author in 2001. The research evaluated the family reactions, positive and negative aspects and performance features of the house under the concept of "post occupancy evaluation". The results indicated that family likes and dislikes are about the negative feeling of the cool draft in the sitting area, good lighting and views, some acoustical problems and positive feeling of cool air from the cold sunken courtyard. In general, the positive reflections of the family were much more than negative aspects.

Coandã flows have been the study of aircraft designers primarily for the prospect of achieving higher lift coefficient wings. Recently the environmental problem of noise pollution attracted further interest on the matter. The approach used is numerical; the computations were made using a large eddy simulation (LES) technique coupled with a Ffowcs-Williams-Hawkings (FWH) acoustic analysis. The spectrum of the flow was measured at three locations in the vicinity of the ramp showing that the low frequency region is dominant. The findings may be used as reference for the development of quiet aircraft that use super-circulation, as it is the case with the Upper Surface Blown (USB) configurations.

There are several methods available to analyze and evaluate the ultimate uplift capacity of pile in the sand layers, based on a homogeneous soil layer. This research compares the three estimations of ultimate uplift capacity of pile developed by Kulhawy et al (1979); Das (1983) and Chattopadhyay and Pise (1986). Since the field experiment did not reach the failure state, the Modified Mazurkiewicz method has been used to predict ultimate uplift capacity of piles. It is found that Kulhawy et al (1979) ultimate uplift capacity is closed to field data, providing the highest safety. In contrast, the ultimate uplift capacity by Chattopadhyay and Pise (1986) method shows the highest difference from the ultimate uplift capacity.

As designers of the built environment, architects have a tremendous opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of the ‘bottom billion’. However, in order to be effective agents of change, these designers must understand and appreciate the concept of social responsibility in architecture, and learn to implement it in their own work. This study seeks to determine the current state of social responsibility training in architectural education by examining the curriculum requirements set by a number of national architectural education accrediting boards to determine whether they include training in the precepts of social responsibility in design. Because these curriculum requirements largely determine the topics and concepts that students will be exposed to in the course of their architectural education, improving this aspect of architectural education is an important step toward maximizing the profession’s contribution to the global effort to improve the lives of the ‘bottom billio

In this study, the analysis is to measure lighting performance of single pedentive dome type in mosque design built during the Ottoman Empire in Istanbul, Turkey. The selected case studies are the Firuzaga and Orhan Gazi Mosque. This study investigates whether Turkish style’s pedentive dome mosque design provides efficient indoor daylighting in the Orhan Gazi Mosque in compression with the Firuzaga Mosque. This assessment is simulated during summer solstice occurred when the sun is perimetering at its most northern position along the Tropic of Cancer. This study applies simulation analysis using Autodesk software known as 3DStudio Max Design 2011 programme. The weather data file was used to provide weather information and climate changes of the study area. The analysis shows that both mosques have mostly an evenly distributed illuminance level with Scale 3, 4 and 5. The Orhan Gazi Mosque has slightly higher illuminance levels compared to those of the Firuzaga Mosque. The study conclude

Problem statement: Developing high-value nanostructured carbon from bio-char, for electrical and natural gas energy storage, is critical to improving the economic viability of thermochemical bioenergy and biofuel conversion processes. Approach: Here we show that chemical activation, using potassium or sodium hydroxide as catalysts, converted the biochar of distiller’s dried grains with soluble into activated carbon with high surface area (> 1500 m2/g). Results: The development of porosity by chemical activation using alkali hydroxides depends on type and dosage of activation catalysts; activation temperature and atmosphere conditions. Activated carbon samples with high mesoporous volume ( 1 ml/g), and nanostructure similar to activated graphene were prepared at activation temperature (1050 °C) and KOH loading (0.05 or 0.075 mol/g biochar). Conclusion: This protocol offers the potential to use other protein rich feedstocks for preparing nanostructured carbon, containing nanostructure si

The study examines how elderly visitors’ perception, interior environment, pathway design quality, and satisfaction are related in the context of interior environment and space planning of museums. This paper explores a theoretical as well as practical key issue in elderly pathway design in museums in Malaysia. The research intends to explore the elderly pathway design that interacts with the interior environment and space planning in museums. This is to fully understand the relationship between elderly visitors’ satisfaction and pathway design. This paper plans to answer critical questions; what is interior pathway design? How does the pathway design relate to the elderly visitors’ satisfaction? And what is the relationship between elderly visitors’ satisfaction, and pathway design quality? This study is one of the few studies focus on elderly people and pathway design. The empirical analysis carried out on 509 of elderly visitors in 21 museums in Malaysia allows us to confirm that th

A field study on the environment condition especially air temperature was carried out in the main prayer hall of Al-Malik Khalid mosque, Penang, Malaysia. The main purpose of this study is to investigate and observe the indoor air temperature conditions during the occurrence of the sun path towards qibla direction on 16th July 2010. The scope of the study covers the main prayer hall under the pyramid roof. A quantitative method was used in the analysis by using thermo hygro anemometer instrument to measure the indoor and outdoor air temperature. The temperature was measured hourly, during daylight hours from 7am to 7pm in July 2010 from 15th to 17th. The result obtained shows that the mosque has the correct and accurate orientation to the qibla. In addition, there are no significant difference between the day of 16th July where the sun was perpendicular over the Ka’abah and one day after and before. The average difference between indoor and outdoor is about 0.46°C to 1.71°C.
