March-April 2013 Mercy justice highlights published every other month JUSTICE HIGHLIGHT Meeting Examines Signs of the Times, Sets Priorities Justice coordinators from throughout the Institute and their leadership liaisons discovered the power of organizing for social change as they learned new tools and processes that will help with more successfully addressing the Critical Concerns that impact the lives of people we love. This annual meeting of the Extended Justice Team, which was hosted by the Institute Justice Team, was steeped in and informed by the signs of the times around the world, within the United States and from the perspective of the growing influence of multi-national corporations. Sisters Eileen Campbell and Anne Curtis of the Institute Leadership Team first reviewed a Mercy leadership document that includes, among other goals and strategies, a framework for integrating personal and communal responses to the Critical Concerns into all aspects of Mercy life

La Misericordia Aborda Tema de la Violencia con Armas Después del Tiroteo en Newtown El tiroteo en una escuela primaria en Newtown, CT, ha puesto la preocupación sobre la violencia con armas en primer plano de la agenda nacional. De hecho, más de 530 defensoras de derechos de la Misericordia – entre los números más altos para una sola acción legislativa – se pusieron en contacto con sus legisladores para instar la promulgación de una ley federal que como mínimo prohíba armas de estilo militar y cargadores de munición de alta capacidad. Mercy Addresses Gun Violence After Newtown Shootings The shootings at an elementary school in Newtown, CT, have pushed concern about gun violence to the forefront of the nation’s agenda. Indeed, more than 530 Mercy advocates – among the most ever for one legislative action -- contacted their legislators to urge enactment of a federal law that at a minimum bans military-style weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. This has deepened concerns about the impact on people most affected by hunger and malnutrition around the world. July-August 2012 Mercy justice highlights published every other month FEATURED CRITICAL CONCERNS ENGAGEMENT College Students Exhibit Passion for Justice Students from Gwynned Mercy College, Mount Aloysius College and Misericordia University met with an aide to Senator Robert Casey (above) as part of an advocacy immersion experience. Forty-one students and staff from Mercy-sponsored colleges and universities came to Washington,D. C. to learn about advocacy through the lens of immigration issues. The program, sponsored by the Conference of Mercy Higher Education (CMHE) and the Institute Justice Team, included a visit to an immigrant center, learning about faith-based advocates’ work on Capitol Hill, and meeting with staff of their legislators. Participating institutions also included Detroit-Mercy, Georgian Court, Mount Mercy, St. Joseph Connecticut, St. Joseph Maine and Saint Xavier. You may read more about the experience here.

May-June 2012 Mercy justice highlights published every other month EARTH Follow-up Initiative to Awakening the Dreamer Planned In response to the Sisters of Mercy call to further efforts to create a sustainable future for Earth, the Extended Justice Team is planning a new initiative called Mercy Taking Action: Deepening the Awakening the Dreamer Experience. This initiative, supported by leadership throughout the Institute, will delve more deeply into themes introduced in Awakening the Dreamer and will engage participants in considering new understandings and applying these to changes to individual behaviors, community practices and institutional policies. Initiative offerings will include a retreat format for various audiences in various settings; short educational modules for Mercy institutions; and a small-group process. March-April 2012 Mercy justice highlights published every other month EARTH Mercyhurst University Takes St. Francis Pledge Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania, has become a Catholic Climate Covenant Partner by endorsing the St. Francis Pledge to Care for Creation and the Poor. The university offers a new major in sustainability studies and uses wind power to meet 100 percent of its electric needs. In 2007, President Tom Gamble joined several hundred college and university presidents in signing the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, which obligates Mercyhurst to a goal of carbon neutrality. November-December 2011 Mercy justice highlights published every other month EARTH Mercy Speaks Out Against Pipeline Project The State Department announced that it is going to continue reviewing the proposed Keystone XL pipeline project to take into consideration environmental concerns expressed during hearings, rallies and protests around the country. Mercy was a critical part of the advocacy movement, with more than 30 Sisters, co-workers and students from Georgian Court University (in above photo) participating in encircling the White House on Nov. 6 to speak out against the pipeline, which would carry dirty tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, to Texas refineries. Noviembre-Diciembre 2011 Lo último de la Misericordia sobre justicia publicado cada dos meses TIERRA La Misericordia Levanta Su Voz contra Proyecto del Ducto El Departamento de Estado anunció que va a continuar revisando la propuesta del proyectado Oleoducto Keystone XL para tomar en consideración las preocupaciones medioambientales expresadas durante audiencias, manifestaciones y protestas por todo el país. La Misericordia fue parte vital en este movimiento de defensa, con más de 30 hermanas, colaboradores en el ministerio y estudiantes de Georgian Court University (en la foto arriba) quienes participaron circundando la Casa Blanca el 6 de noviembre para expresarse contra el ducto, que podría transportar tierras alquitranadas sucias desde Alberta, Canada a refinerías de Texas. September-October 2011 Mercy justice higlights published every other month EARTH Philadelphia Hosts Rally Against Hydrofracking The Mid-Atlantic Justice Office joined others in speaking out against the environmental degradation and pollution of our waters brought about by the process of hydraulic fracturing in the drilling for natural gas. The lead organization, “Protecting Our Waters”, sponsored several events scheduled to coincide with the gas industry gathering held in Philadelphia Sept. 7-8. There was an afternoon march demonstrating at strategic offices of the federal Environmental Protection Agency and elected officials, followed by an interfaith Blessing of the Waters of the Delaware River at Penn Treaty Park.
