On August 8, the final day of the fiveday Busan International Magic Festival
(BIMF), I was asked during a question-andanswer session to comment on the future of
magic in Korea.
Given the whirlwind of well-organized
activities, the obvious enthusiasm for magic
among the general public, and the high standard to which our cherished art has risen in
this part of the world, it was an easy question
to answer.
“The future of magic in Korea,” I
said, “is bright.
”
In less than twenty years, the Korean
community of magicians has grown to
include close to thirty magic clubs and
over 2,000 Internet sites devoted to the art.
Departments of Magic Entertainment have
opened in a number of the country’s schools,
including, most notably, Dong-Pusan College University.
It is there that Yuji Yasuda
heads up a two-year, fully accredited program covering the history, theory, and practice of magic that is designed to educate the
public and help them to love it.
