 Chapter I. Introduction I
have
grown
up
around
the
ocean,
boats,
and
sea
life. 
I
feel
it
is
a
part
of
who
I
am
as
 a
person. 
Yet,
there
is
so
much
I
wish
to
discover. 
My
independent
study
entails
my
 volunteer
work
at
the
Smithsonian
Tropical
Research
Institute
in
Bocas
Del
Toro,
 Panama. 
I
conducted
a
field
research
on
the
popular
response
among
Afro‐ Caribbean
Peoples
of
Bocas
del
Toro
and
their
knowledge
of
what
contributes
to
 ocean
contamination. 
This
study
also
has
a
social
component
as
it
seeks
to
 understand
the
affects
of
human
practices
on
the
ocean. 

 
 In
addition,
I
took
yoga
classes
at
Bocas
Yoga. 
The
primary
reason
was
to
analyze
 how
individuals
that
attend
the
yoga
studio
feel
and
think
about
marine
 conservation
on
the
island. 

The
idea
was
to
see
if
yoga
in
 Weniger
