‘Farmers can realize over N2. 5bn from planting Jatropha plant’ Written by Administrator Monday, 31 October 2011 16:49 How would you describe Jatropha plant to a layman understanding? Jatropha plant is a plant found in the arid zone of Nigeria. It’s a plant recognised by the United Nations Desertification Control as an intermediate solution to control desertification and above all, it’s also a plant using seeds and its oil can be refined into bio-diesel that is a renewable diesel. These are the two important aspects of the plant. Why should government or farmers invest in Jatropha as a business? First of all, if we want to mitigate the effect climate change we have to set up carbon-dioxide first, secondly to go into production of bio-fuel then thirdly, to reclaim degraded lands or to re-fertilize degraded land. So, as far as I am concerned, as a farmer, we are not interested really in life scale intensive farming plantation of here but rather w

require maintenance at costs of $300 per mile in 2006. A potential cost reduction could be realized in using this land to grow biofuel feedstock crops. The fuel made from these crops could then be used in the DOT’s fleets and other state vehicles. This project was initiated in 2007 in cooperation with the UDOT and Utah State University. The concept quickly caught the nation’s attention and a national alliance was proposed. This alliance would partner with DOTs and land grant colleges in the respective states along with federal government agencies and industry to reduce carbon footprinting and emissions, decrease America’s dependence on foreign oil and solidify our national security by the production of localized biofuel feed stocks. Who is the FreeWays to Fuel National Alliance? To date personnel from the following land grant universities are committed to the Alliance pending funding: Utah State University, Washington State University, University of Idaho, Montana State Universit

The specific site for this study is located in the dry region of Gran Chaco in Santa Cruz. The aim of this work is to analyse the potential of useable land and resources for sustainable biodiesel production from Jatropha without competition with edibles production using economic, environmental and

Evaluation of Castor and Lesquerella Oil Derivatives as Additives in Biodiesel and Ultralow Sulfur Diesel Fuels† Bryan R. Moser,* Steven C. Cermak, and Terry A. Isbell United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research SerVice, National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, 1815 North UniVersity Street, Peoria, Illinois 61604 ReceiVed October 23, 2007. ReVised Manuscript ReceiVed December 11, 2007 The use of petroleum-derived additives is ubiquitous in fuels production, including biodiesel (BD) and ultralow sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuels. Development and employment of domestically derived, biodegradable, renewable, and nontoxic additives is an attractive goal. As such, estolides (1, 2) and 2-ethylhexyl esters (3, 4) derived from castor and lesquerella oils, due to their excellent low temperature, lubrication, and oxidation stability properties, were investigated as potential fuel additives in soybean oil methyl esters (SME), palm oil methyl esters (PME), and ULSD.
